Between Turkey and Russia, on the Black Sea shore and under the Caucasus Mountains is Georgia. This is where Asia meets Europe, here 'the East' becomes 'the West', and here you'll find a society, whose characteristic location in the gap between two continents has affected the nation's identity and self-understanding. Despite still more noticeable attempts of empowerment the society is characterized by having been under the influence of especially the Soviet Union, a circumstance which, like the significant location at the border between 'east' and 'west' is reflected in the contemporary Georgian art scene.

Through video, photography and sculpture, and based on Eastern philosophical thinking and with an elemental interest in existential themes such as loneliness, longing, human relationships and the search for meaning, Georgian artist Giorgi Khaburzania examines divergent conceptions of human values, social structures and hierarchies. It is on his physical travels around the world as well as through spiritual enterings into himself that Khaburzania finds inspiration for his art.

With a quiet and rather meditative expression Khaburzania interprets the relationship between the human mind and the physical world. The exhibition at Galleri Image is the result of a longer journey to the Middle East and Central Asia, which Khaburzania did in 2007 and 2008. Danish artist Lasse Krog Møller has made a map of the journey, which will be part of the exhibition.

Giorgi Khaburzania was born in 1982 and graduated with a degree in photography and media from Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Art in 2008.
MUSIC OF BEING is Giorgi Khaburzania’s first show in the North.
The exhibition is curated by Wato Tseretali and will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with a text by Lali Pertenava.

Opening: Friday August 30 at 4 pm at Gallery Image.

Seminar: Saturday August 31 at 4 pm at Godsbanen, Institut for X, room D.A.K, where Wato Tseretali and Lali Pertenava from Centre of Contemporary Art - Tbilisi will give talks. The theme of the seminar is tendencies at the art scene in the Caucasus region.

Georgian video art at Godsbanen, Institut for X
31 August - 8 September 2013

Alongside Giorgi’s exhibition at Galleri Image we present a series of video works by six Georgian artists at Godsbanen. The videos are challenging the stereotypical east-west dichotomy that in many years, and for better and worse has affected the Georgian self-understanding, and gives an insight into a society that has undergone a tremendous transformation since the empowerment in 1991. Aarhus-based video and media artists Hanne Nielsen and Birgit Johnsen have selected the six artists. The participating artists are: Koka Ramishvili, Levan Chogoshvili, Nino Sekhniashvili, Mamuka Japharidze, Cumbogroup and Temo Javakhishvili.
