LANDSCAPE IN BETWEEN

With the landscape, as an overall theme for his art, Morten Barker draws a line back to the Golden Age. Back then contemporary artists were encouraged to visit the country side for a perpetuation of what they saw.

LANDSCAPE IN BETWEEN
Artist:
Morten Barker
THE LANDSCAPE IN BETWEEN interprets the anonymous landscapes in Denmark's military terrains and portrays the fact that the landscape constantly is balancing between an innocent, pure, Golden Age like landscape and the brutality of the war landscape. In these terrains heaters bloom between the heavy crawler tracks of the tanks, while the boot prints of the soldiers are mixed with animal tracks from badger, otter and deer. Fired grenades and sea eagles and larks are sharing the air.
In the exhibition Morten Barker touches a subject that seems distant in relation to Denmark's immediate self-image as a peaceful nation. But Denmark is in fact a belligerent nation, and it provides not only dead soldiers on foreign soil, but it also marks our domestic nature. So what about nature and war exercises? How is the space between bang shells versus lark trill topped with roaring red deer? This contrast, Morten Barker examins in the exhibition THE LANDSCAPE IN BETWEEN - no political position on whether it is true or terrible, but as a proposal for a quiet place from which to observe the landscape in between.
With the landscape as an overall theme for his art, Morten Barker draws a line back to the Golden Age. Back then contemporary artists were encouraged to visit the country side for a perpetuation of what they saw. Their portrayals have since then become an essential guide to our perception of what we like to call 'the Danish landscape'.
The exhibition consists of photographs and a video installation. The way Golden Age painter's focus on foreground, middle ground and background is a major inspiration for Barkers work. This way of building up images has inspired Barker to build his own landscape photographs as a collage of 24-30 separate photographs which was taken during periods where everything passing by the camera lens was recorded.
Barkers work was created during several stays in Det Jyske Dragonregiment (the tanks), Sikkerhedskontoret (explosives) and Naturstyrelsen (red deer). Morten Barker has participated as an observer in several exercises with both Hærens Kampskole and Det Jydske Dragonregiment at Oksbøllejren.

The exhibition is curated by Kathrine Svanum. In relation to the exhibition a catalogue will be published.
