In 2013, five of Aarhus’ galleries held a one-day festival called Gallery Night. The galleries had longer opening hours and special exhibitions. The themes of the festival were, among others, art photography, women in art and art with a musical focus.
Galleri Image exhibited video and photo pieces by artists Jeanette Ehlers (b. 1975), Patricia Kaersenhout, Sonja Lillebæk Christensen (b. 1972) and Gina Zacharias (b. 1975).
To the sound of a burning moped the guests are invited inside the gallery, where Sonja Lillebæk Christensen’s unique video installation The Moped, 2013 breaks through with its seminal realism.
From the video installation to Gina Zacharias’ incisive projection Father at work, 2011, showing photographs taken with analogue Point and Shoot cameras by fathers from Bispebjerg - one of Copenhagen's poorer and more multi-ethnic areas. Father At Work offers a unique view of everyday situations and emphasizes photography's remarkable ability to hold your gaze.
In the adjoining room Jeannette Ehlers and Patricia Kaersenhout mark the end with their excellent video The image of me, 2012, based on the poem 'Lord Why did You Make Me Black' by RuNett Nia Ebo. Here the camera – the video - appears as an intermediary technology between identity and being.
Despite differences the four artists find common ground in using photography and video to present the notion of being as either anchored in documentary or tied to reflections on the (self-) portrait's transformation. Thus, they underline the strength of the medium's artistic qualities.
The other galleries taking part in Gallery Night Aarhus 2013 were Lunchmoney, Galleri Profilen, Galerie MøllerWitt and Charlotte Fogh Gallery.
