In connection with Kenyan artist Mimi Cherono Ng'ok's exhibition, Always, in Spite of Everything, a seminar entitled A Light in the Tropics will be held on Saturday, April 2nd at the Aarhus Art Academy from 2 pm to 4 pm.
The seminar will focus on young artists from the global south using tropical light in their photographic art works.
Mimi Cherono Ng'ok will give an artist talk during the seminar focusing on subjects which regularly inform her photographic practice such as, identity, belonging, migration and growth.
The Nigerian exhibition curator and photographer Akinbode Akinbiyi, who has been based in Berlin for over a decade, will give a talk about the nature of tropical light. He will explore ways in which photographers use it in their work in opposition to the "famed" light prevalent in the northern hemisphere.
Argentinian curator, Gabriela Salgado, living in London, will give a presentation on ideas and fantasies associated with the term 'tropical'. Salgado will explore conceptual approaches to landscape and engage with places we see represented in works by Cherono Ng'ok.
There will be opportunities for questions and feedback with the speakers following their talks.
