Stephen Gill. Series Photographs
Stephen Gill
It is with great pleasure that Galleri Image presents the exhibition Stephen Gill. Series Photographs by the acclaimed artist Stephen Gill. Gill was born in Bristol, England, in 1971. He became interested in optics in his early childhood, thanks to his father’s preoccupation with insects and pond life, which they inspected under the microscope. Yet, it was not until the late 1990s that Gill emerged as a major force in British photography.

Stephen Gill. Series Photographs is Gill’s first solo show in Denmark. The exhibition centers on one of his most recent series Best Before End while also incorporating retrospective elements including a selection of his photobooks and a slideshow of previous works.

Best Before End was printed from negatives that were boiled in energy drinks. This softened the film emulsion causing image shifts and disruptions, resulting in fantastical, abstract and vividly colored works that reflect our hectic, contemporary urban life.

The exhibition also includes a carousel slide projector installation, featuring the projects Best Before End, Coexistence and Talking to Ants

Finally, the show displays many of Gill’s best photobooks, such as Invisible, Hackney Wick, Warming Down, Buried, Of Ground, Coming up for Air, B- Slides, A Book of Birds and Coexistence to name just a few. The books are published by his own publishing house, Nobody, and are known for their special finish and tactile qualities. Gill considers these publications to be the final stage of his photographic work and so wishes to fully exploit the photobook medium.

Stephen Gill has exhibited at major international venues such as Tate London, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Haus Der Kunst in Munich, FOAM Museum as well as solo shows in festivals including Recontres d’Arles and PhotoEspaña.

The exhibition is curated by Moritz Neumüller and is a part of PHOTOBOOK WEEK AARHUS
