Galleri Image
Galleri Image is a
non-commercial gallery exhibiting high quality Danish and
international photo- and video art. Situated in Denmarks
second city, Aarhus, it was founded in 1977 by a group of
art photographers and lay enthusiasts and is the oldest
such dedicated gallery space in Scandinavia: for many years
it was the only photographic gallery in Denmark. In the
course of more than thirty years of exhibitions it has acquired
an outstanding international reputation, contributing significantly
to the development of photography as an art form, and to
the recognition of photography as an independent cultural
entity.
The gallery has hosted shows by well-known
photographers such as Duane Michals, Diane Arbus, Christer
Strömholm, Martin Parr, Luis Gonzalez Palma, Carlos
Garaicoa, Anthony Haughey, Kyungwoo Chun and Amy Stein.
Among the contemporary Danish artists who have exhibited
at Galleri Image in recent years are Joakim Eskildsen, Birgitta
Lund, Nicolai Howalt, Søren Lose, Astrid Kruse Jensen
, Pia Arke, Ebbe Stub Wittrup, Trine Søndergård
and Adam Jeppesen.
In addition to the above, Galleri Image
has curated a number of original large-scale exhibitions:
From China (Chinese contemporary art photography,
part of the 2003 Aarhus Festival); Interferences,
an exhibition of contemporary Swiss art photography (2004);
and New Adventures: Contemporary Danish Photography
& Video" an exhibition originally mounted in Seoul,
Korea and later toured through China during 2007-2008. More
recently, other successful exhibitions have been held in
China and India.
In May 2009 Galleri Image was co-producer
of a video work that premiered in Aarhuss art cinema
Øst for Paradis: Summertale by Katarzyna
Kozyra; while this year (2010) a number of international
art festival collaborations are planned, including the Copenhagen
Photo Festival (May) and the Dak'Art Biennial in Dakar,
Senegal.
Galleri Image presents approximately
eight to ten exhibitions annually, almost invariably accompanied
by an original catalogue an important source of documentation
for the public, artists, and historians. Most of the gallerys
exhibitions are accompanied by artist talks, lectures and
seminars. Galleri Image regularly collaborates with other
art venues in the city, including Aarhus Art Building
Center for Contemporary Art.
