Photobook Week Aarhus 2017 celebrated its 4th edition from September 21st to 24th. The programme represented an ongoing investigation of the development and role of the photobook as an artistic media, and was curated by international experts under the direction of independent curator Moritz Neumüller. Photobook Week Aarhus was organized in collaboration between Galleri Image and Aarhus School of Architecture.

This year, the theme of Photobook Week Aarhus was Distribution & Markets using a regional axis which mapped the Danish/Scandinavian photobook praxis in the global context. There was also a focus on topics related to publishing, distributing, buying, trading, and collecting photobooks as well as urbanism and landscape which included Architectural Practices.

As something new, Photobook Week Aarhus introduced the brand new event; Design Night, which was a gallery crawl where we visited PWA pop up exhibitions at two exclusive design stores in Aarhus. Here a curated selection of 20-30 contemporary photobooks with distinguished covers, bindings, and packaging materials was displayed in order to show the importance of editorial design to create sensorial experiences. The photobooks included were by artists such as Alejandro Cartagena, Ricardo Cases, and Alena Zhandarova, and was exhibited at Verpan in Vestergade and B&O in Klostergade.

As a special feature for 2017, Thomas Wiegand curated an exhibition about Michael Schmidt's photobooks at Aros Aarhus Art Museum and presented the lecture Collecting Photobooks: Schmidt & Company

This year's programme also contained gallery walks and exhibitions including a selection of shortlisted dummies from respectively the FotoBookFestival Kassel and the Nordic Dummy Award. As always, there was lots of interesting talks, which was hosted by experts such as Katrìn Elvarsdòttir, Tom Nielsen, Carsten Juhl, and Hein Heinsen among others.

Sunday you could have participated in a workshop held by the German-Icelandic artist Claudia Hausfeld in collaboration with Mørkekammeret at Godsbanen Cultural Production Center, and, same as last year, received advice and critique on your own photobook dummy at the Dummy Doctoring Workshop at the Aarhus School of Architecture on September 21st.

The festival mainly took place at the Aarhus School of Architecture and included pop-up exhibitions at design stores, Galleri Image, and ARoS Aarhus Art Museum. Additionally, there were workshops at Godsbanen Cultural Production Centre.

Photobook Week Aarhus 2017 was supported by Dreyers Fond, Nationalbankens Jubilæumsfond, Institut Français Danemark, Politiken-Fonden, and the City of Aarhus.
