Disruptions in Landscape Photography
26 February 03 April 2011

Galleri Image presents Gouge: Disruptions
in Landscape Photography by London based artist Tom Lovelace.
For this exhibition, three distinct yet inter-related projects
are brought together for the first time. Conceptually bound by
an exploration into the landscape as site of experimentation and
reinvention, this collection of work seeks to present a ruptured
and remodelled photographic landscape.
'Gouge' signals both a continuation
and diversion for Lovelace. His long-term interest in the sculptural
and performative photographic subject remains prevalent, however
here he leaves the studio and industrial interior and strays into
the open landscape. References to the development of land art
and the use of the camera as documentation tool in the 1960's
seep through. Lovelace deploys physical actions on the material
land through to forms of post-action; disrupting the image via
the manipulation of the photographic surface in search for a photographic
terrain that oscillates between a state of the mundane and the
absurd. These acts and processes are solitary ones, undertaken
alone and performed solely for the camera.
Lovelace's practice has developed
through a fusion of photography, sculpture and performative intervention.
Primarily using the industrial landscape as his sourcing ground,
he seeks to create a 'photographic subject' that takes form through
ephemeral objects and environments that exist exclusively for
the camera. Once an image is complete, the depicted scene is subsequently
dismantled or discarded, leaving the photographic representation
as the unique access point. The moment at which the production
of functionless objects and environments intersect with photography
is the key juncture in his work.
Tom Lovelace (b.1981) studied Photography
and Art History at the Bournemouth Arts Institute and Goldsmiths
College, London. He has exhibited throughout the UK, displaying
work at ArtSway, Photofusion, Flowers Gallery and the Royal West
of England Academy. Lovelace has been selected for the Terry O'Neill
Award and his work has been published by Source Photographic Review.
He recently received the 2010 Rhubarb Rhubarb Bursary. This exhibition
will mark his first solo show outside the UK. An accompanying
catalogue will be available with a contribution by David Evans,
editor of the anthology Appropriation: Documents in Contemporary
Art.
