Lotte Fløe Christensen (DK)
"Sticks and Stones"
27 May 26 June 2011

In 2009 the
Danish artist Lotte Fløe Christensen travelled to Canada
to photograph the forests. Her intended goal was to measure the
endless sense of wilderness against the feeling of freedom. It
turned out this feeling of freedom was not forthcoming, however,
and the encounter with grandiose Nature left the artist on the
contrary with a sense of fragility. Nevertheless, this special
fragile experience of the wild, combined with studies of garden
therapy and a close survey of the environment, has led the artist
to some fascinating visual studies which utilize the skills of
sculpture, drawing and photography.
In her exhibition, "Sticks and
Stones", Lotte Fløe Christensen works conceptually
with the landscape, contrasting it to Man in both a physical and
a mental sense. We see her attempting to add new dimensions to
our understanding and appreciation of nature as a concept, while
at the same time challenging the conventional notion of nature
as an organic realm of harmony. Directly and sometimes naively,
the artist probes her surroundings. Nature's individual components
- plants, branches and rocks - are posed isolated in front of
the lens in order to give a quick, immediate, and sometimes comical
insight into the nature of the wild.
"Sticks and Stones" is
an existential story about the meeting between Man and the outside
world, and also the tension between psychology and science. How
does one position oneself as an individual in the continuum? Does
the grandeur of nature invite the individual to a loss of self
and/or reconciliation with the world? And may it even contain
a natural healing potential, with its fascinating structures and
dazzlingly beautiful pictures? "Sticks and Stones" contributes
powerful arguments and perceptions in the discussion of what it
means to be surrounded by the "natural".
Lotte Fløe Christensen (b.
1979) graduated from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland and The
University of Art and Design in Finland and has exhibited both
domestically and abroad.
In connection with the exhibition
the book "Country" is produced in collaboration with
Lea Fløe Christensen.
