I’m in the Wrong Film by Hans Gindlesberger February 12 – March 14, 2010
I’m in the Wrong Film is a series of 12 large format photographs and 3 video presentations related to loss of indigenousness. Many small towns in the USA are marked by loss of a sense of community and by depopulation, and must now reflect upon their relevance in modern society. Many such towns cultivate a nostalgic picture of an idealized past.
Hans Gindlesberger’s photographs express themes such as localization and delocalization. They confront rural decline by incorporating images from theater and silent films. The photographs are structured within a non-linear narrative framework, where each image is a portrait of an individual who is striving to cope with a scenario of displacement and absurdity.
The pictures are composed of staged tableaux that present these small towns and explore concepts of identity, memory, place, and loss of belonging. The images show a transient and ephemeral character who must interact with a series of constructed environments. The artist’s self-staging uses elements from theater and the silent film and subsequent Photoshop processing, all of which set focus on disharmony and loss of localized belonging. The character in the pictures becomes a symbol of the little town fighting for survival in modern society.
I’m in the Wrong Film, Hans Gindlesberger’s first exhibition in Denmark, will be accompanied by a catalog published by Galleri Image. The exhibition is supported by the Aarhus Municipal Cultural Funds and the Danish Arts Council’s International Visual Arts Committee.
Hans Gindlesberger was born in 1981 in Ohio, USA. He received a MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in 2006 from the State University of New York in Buffalo. In 2008 he was awarded an artist’s fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Hans Gindlesberger’s works have been shown in the United States and in Europe and have been included in publications and collections. Hans Gindlesberger is currently employed as Assistant Professor of Photography at the Peak School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
