Galleri Image
is pleased to present a new exhibition:
Michelle Eistrup (Denmark)
"WILD AS THE WIND"
8 October - 14 November 2010

For the past
two years Michelle Eistrup has observed, photographed and filmed
a herd of wild horses in an open range of beach at Læsø,
one of Denmark's many islands. By means of an installation that
comprises photography, audio-collage and video projection, the
artist seeks to capture and communicate the most vivid possible
sense of these encounters. Since it wasn't feasible in any way
to control the behaviour of the animals, Eistrup had to rely on
following and observing the horses' movements largely on their
own terms.
Two aspects in particular of the horses' journeys came to interest
the artist: their use of the beach and their behaviour at night-time.
Whereas during the day the horses assumed beautiful sculptural
formations (either resting or in movement) at night they danced
playfully, and veered off onto unusual hidden paths.
In WILD AS THE WIND the observer
steps, too, into an audio landscape that complements the beautiful
pictures of beach, heather and horses: music has been mixed together
with recorded sounds of the night. The observer scans the sfumato-like
landscape that shows the herds moving about, and experiences in
doing so the union of darkness and brightness - opposites which
in this case complement each other.
Michelle Eistrup was born and brought
up in Denmark (1969), and has lived both in Jamaica and in New
York. She was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen
from which she graduated in 2000, and since then has taught courses
in video-art at Statens Museum for Kunst. Her art has a post colonial
inflection, and shows a strong attachment to both African and
Caribbean culture. Michelle Eistrup has participated in a number
of solo- and group exhibitions around the world.
Galleri Image will publish a catalogue with a text by Mark Le
Fanu.
