It is with great pleasure that
Galleri Image presents the exhibition
Mono
by Trine Søndergaard
20 November 20 December, 2009

The exhibition Mono is
composed of a series of portraits. The artists intention
has been to pin-point a state of mind. Each portrait is keyed
to a particular colour, chosen by the sitter as a starting point.
The frames of the paintings match the colour given to the individual
portraits: motive and frame are thus brought together and find
their own harmony.
Faces in the paintings are averted:
eyes in the picture fail to meet the eye of the beholder. By such
means, Trine Søndergaard seeks to carve out an intimate
space round her subjects. In traditional portraiture, the motive
is either private or representative: the portrayed subject, for
example, might be a family member or else a public person. By
contrast, Trine Søndergaard is interested in the possibilities
of a portrait occupying a deliberately anonymous space. These
pictures are in a sense anti-portraits by virtue of the fact that
they are trying to catch a condition and not a likeness.
The photographer observes what is happening visually when the
gaze is recessive and the face barely visible. The portraits disappear,
almost, into their own respective colours.
A book on the exhibition, Monochrome
Portraits, with texts by Ph.d Mette Mortensen, will be issued
by the German publishing house Hatje Cantz in December.
Trine Søndergaard was born
in 1972. Her work has featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions
in Denmark and abroad, and she is represented in a wide range
of collections. In 2000 she received international recognition

monograph that accompanied this event. In April of this year she
received a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation.
Her current project How to Hunt, made in collaboration
with Nicolai Howalt, will be exhibited at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum
in the fall of 2010. Meantime, in the spring of next year, Trine
Søndergaard´s portrait project Strude
will be exhibited at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.
