"Burden or Support" presents an
exhibition of recent video works by the South Korean artist Kyungwoo
Chun. Many are based on performances that engage the audience
in active participation. The broad subject of these works is interpersonal
relationships.
In the video "Silence is Movement" a group of seated
school students are asked to target an individual and after an
interval of seven minutes to approach this person and take his
or her place. The camera, acting as a surveillance monitor, follows
the interaction of the group, highlighting the pupils' restlessness.
The participants in "A Naming Game" are also students;
here they individually take turns at standing in front of the
camera and announcing the name of the next person, before returning
to the control group. This continues until the whole group has
been named. The video points to the relation between identity
and naming, and to the way that the individual relates to the
group.
The interaction between group and individual is further treated
in the video "18 x 1 Minute", combined here with a reflection
on the individual's perception of time. Nine subjects are asked
to decide when they think 18 minutes have passed. Between the
group and the audience there's a clock only visible to the audience:
this experimental installation questions how time is experienced
subjectively.
The video "Burden or Support" records a performance
Kyungwoo Chun made in several places with a group of people who
hadn't previously met each other, and who have been seated in
front of each other in two rows. The subjects are asked to reach
out to the person opposite them. The touch of the hand provides
the possibility of having physical contact with a stranger for
a short period of time. The two persons become formally interdependent,
yet they can be either a burden or a support for each other depending
on how their brief relationship develops.
