Baroque fairy tales, drag queens, Snow White and the seven dwarfs, an American cheerleader and castration are merely a few of the scenarios meeting the viewer in Katarzyna Kozyra´s universe.
In co-operation with the Aarhus Art Building, Galleri Image displays selected videos from the series, "In Art Dreams Come True". At the same time, Galleri Image is proud to co-produce an entirely new work - the final work of a set of the series "A Summer Tale". This oeuvre will make its world premiere in Aarhus during this exhibition. Katazyna Kozyra´s video series, "In Art Dreams Come True", deals with human existence in a complex and confronting manner. She works with themes such as identity, gender and barrier-breaking. By means of infiltration and unmasking, she confronts myths, taboos and stereotypes, thus discussing norms for human nature, behavior in the social sphere and beauty, gender and body standards.
In her performance -and videoworks, Kozyra dabbles with gender role conventions and makes plain the postmodern understanding of gender as a performative act. She examines the man/woman dichotomy, literally employing in her theatrical performances the gender as a dress we can put on and take off. She works with the transformation between the genders, thereby seeking to undermine the gender dichotomies.
Kozyra stages herself in different feminine roles, from opera diva to cheerleader and from Snow White to drag queen, initiating a discussion of what a real woman is. Employing transcendent stagings Katazyna Kozyra compels the viewer to reflect upon and re-examine the established norms. Her performance universe unfolds in a realm between art, dreams and reality challenging and provoking the viewer to take an active place in the discussion.

Throughout her career as an artist, Katarzyna Kozyra has been highly praised, and the Venice Biennale in 1999, she was awarded a prize.

Hanne Wroblevska, Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw, curates the exhibition at the Aarhus Art Building, in co-operation with Beate Cegielska, Galleri Image.

A workshop about identity, body and gender with Rune Gade and Tina Raun is arranged Saturday the 27th of September at 14.00 in Aarhus Art Building.

Kulturudviklingspuljen, Aarhus Kommune, the Danish Arts Agency, Montana Møbler, Calamus, Konsul George Jorck og Hustru Emma Jorks Fond and the Polish Embassy in Denmark support the exhibition.

Katarzyna Kozyra and Hanne Wroblevska will be present at the opening.
