Harri Pälviranta,
Finland
"BATTERED"
2nd of February 2nd of March 2008

Split eyebrows, fractured skulls,
broken noses and swollen lips. Faces, hands and clothes smeared
in blood, and the pavement bearing blood red traces.
Harri Pälvirantas tough photographs
present bloody and beaten young men, who after fighting willingly
let themselves be photographed and almost with pride present
their wounds as an expression of their masculinity. Battered
is a documentary series with its focus on people who have been
subjected to physical violence in the public space. The images
concentrate on the physical marks that an assault leaves on
the victims body. By accompanying the Finnish police at
work in the city by night Harri Pälviranta photos capture
the brawlers immediately after the violent fights have stopped.
With this series Harri Pälviranta
wants to examine the masculine character and its tendency
for violence. Drunks aggression and lack of inhibitions
are often channelled into physical violence directed at others.
Through his artist project he wishes to create a dialogue with
his audience, as he believes that this type of behaviour has
achieved an unfortunate form of accept at least in certain
areas of masculine culture. The successful brawler is seemingly
both acclaimed and respected by the group he identifies with.
Harri Pälviranta (f. 1971)
has a BA in photography, an MA in Mediescience from Turku Arts
Academy and has studied political science and philosophy at
Tampere University in Finland. He is currently working on a
PhD. at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. He has
participated in numerous group shows and has had several solo
exhibitions in Europe. For his latest work Battered
