Galleri Image is proud to present

Salisbury
by Marla Sweeney
13th April 20th May
2007
Marla Sweeney takes us to the beach
near the American coast city of Salisbury north of Boston, Massachusetts.
Here, we meet an unpolished portrait of American everyday life,
where people have put on their bathing clothes, relaxing. The
exhibition Salisbury portrays children and adults,
who without dissimulation are being observed through a camera.
We are allowed to look at the people, even though their bodies
are ageing, fat or pale.
That these persons lack outward
glamour in order to live up to todays beauty ideals does
not weaken their aura of dignity and inner calm. Marla Sweeneys
portraits disclose a deeper beauty in the persons, whom she
photographs. Getting under the viewers skin, the portraits
are psychologically descriptive, conveying a rich gamut of emotions
and moods, covering the humorous as well as the religious or
the deep.
The series documentary stamp
opens up a critical look at modern society. In a way, the pictures
can be perceived as both depressing and repulsive because they
bring us face to face with the exposure of bodies, which do
not live up to todays beauty ideals. The pictures may
provoke the viewer because they expose what is low social status,
and they can give rise to concern about cultural decadence.
However, the photographs can also be a relieving experience
because they show us the world as we basically know it looks
like in actual fact.
Marla Sweeney (born 1968) lives
and works in New England. She is educated from State University
of New York (MFA in Photography), Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson
(Master Class in Photography) and University of Massachusetts,
Amherst (Bachelor in Film and Cultural Studies). Marla Sweeney
has exhibited in USA and Europe the last 10 years. The pictures
from Salisbury were taken during the period 2003
2006. With the exhibition in Galleri Image, Marla Sweeneys
works are being presented for the first time in Denmark.
