Rana El Nemr, Egypt

"Coastline (il sahel)"

1. September – 1. Oktober 2006

Seminar on contemporary Arab photography - September, 2. 2006

"Coastline is a new photographic installation by the Egyptian artist Rana El Nemr.

Her photographs from the northern Egyptian coast focus on entryways to private vacation homes resorts, which have in growing numbers emerged since the beginning of the 1990s. The photographs show the resorts' architecturally impressive facades and gateways, that often are built long before the homes themselves, in order to attract potential buyers.

Rana El Nemr is fascinated by the interplay between architecture, aesthetics, and the resort's name presented on the gateway, which symbolizes the residents' identity in terms of social, political, and economic status.

The photographs invite viewers to imagine themselves in the lavish universe behind the gateways. At the same time, the photographs contain a contrasting message, since the gateways often tower majestically like theater backdrops over barren landscapes.

Rana El Nemr was born in 1974. She has been awarded several prestigious prizes, among them the Grand Prize at the Bamako Biennial of Photography, and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Egypt, Europe, and Japan. She was educated at the American University in Cairo (AUC) where she majored in journalism and mass communication and minored in art, and at the New York Institute of Photography.

Galleri Image is publishing an exhibition catalogue with text by Trine Rytter Andersen.

You are cordially invited to the opening on Friday, September 1, from 16:00 - 18:00.
