"Focusing"
3. - 25. juni

Galleri
Image and the Spanien 19C Exhibition Space present from June
3rd to 25th 2006 a double-exhibition by the Lithuanian artist
Jurgita Remeikyte
Focusing
- Foreground and Background
Jurgita
Remeikyte's double exhibition Focusing - Foreground and Background
invites the viewer to reflect on the relationship between foreground
and background. Her work is anchored in photographic strategies
and concepts, and she uses her unique understanding of spatial
elements to create rooms for the viewer to discover, where the
background in one situation becomes the foreground in the next.
Jurgita Remeikyte's works play with the concepts of foreground
and background and invite viewers to reflect on how they focus
on a scene through their choice of foreground and background.
The exhibition demonstrates that this choice can be made in
different ways.
Jurgita Remeikyte works in a zone between photography and installation,
poetically bringing into play both the two-dimensional and the
three-dimensional. She is thus an exponent for that interdisciplinary
approach that is often used by the younger generation of Lithuanian
photo artists.
The exhibition takes its point of departure in the two exhibition
spaces and their geographic locations. Galleri Image is thus
the foreground, located in the center of town, and Spanien 19C
is the background outside the center of town. The foreground-background
dialog thus also takes place not only within each exhibition,
but also across town.
Jurgita Remeikyte received her education at the Department of
Photo and Media at the Art Academy in Vilnius, Lithuania, and
at the Utrecht School of the Arts in Holland. She has in addition
studied theology and philosophy at Vytautus Magnus University
in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Jurgita Remeikyte is a senior lecturer at the Art Academy of
Vilnius. She has participated in a number of group exhibitions
in Europe, and has held individual exhibitions in Lithuania,
Poland, and Belgium. In 2006 she will also be exhibiting in
Juodkrante and Siauliai in Lithuania, and in Dresden and Dortmund
in Germany.
This collaborative effort between Image and Spanien 19C is based
on the hope of growing levels of cooperation between exhibition
spaces in Aarhus. Collaborative exhibitions can give artists
the chance of showing their works in an expanded forum, and
can be a source of inspiration for new ways of working and exhibiting
as an artist.
Jurgita Remeikyte will be present at the opening, which starts
at Galleri Image on Saturday, June 3 at 14.00. At 15.00 a bus
will drive guests to the Spanien 19C Exhibition Space, where
the opening will continue with a performance by Jurgita Remeikyte
at about 15.15.
The exhibition is supported by Aarhus Municipality's Cultural
Development Fund and by the Nordic Council of Ministers' Sleipnir
grant.
During June, Galleri Image's Demorum will present Give them
Sweets by Kim T. Grønborg, a seductive, red candy universe,
a spatial illusion created by lights and mirrors. "Give
them what they want, shiny surfaces, form without content, keep
up appearances because that is all that's left. Sweets to the
sweet, candy for the people."
