DEMORUMMET presents the work
World
Cup Fair Play? Retro

India qualified
for the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. But the newly-independent country
withdrew in protest at the international football body FIFA's refusal
to allow its players to perform in bare feet. World Cup football
is a significant event, fostering global awareness; ideally it is
apolitical and the rules are equal for all. Fair play in football
penalizes dirty tricks with a red card. The contest has pre-empted
the mantras of our time such as globalization and harmonisation.
Earth shrinks: they drink Coca Cola in Africa, and it does mean
something when a butterfly flutter its wings in China. Yet the cracks
exist concerning both the World Cup and globalization. The
question is always present: who is in control of making the rules
of the game?
Ole Bak Jakobsen (born 1960)
works primarily with concept art. While World Cup Fair Play?
Retro (2010) is being exhibited in Aarhus, the real World
Cup will be under way in South Africa.
The current exhibition is curated by
Joaquín Zaragoza.
