"The Drum of Extinction

af Hilarius Hofstede"

This installation is a continuation of Hofstede's critique of commerce (as in the exhibition Natural
Born History, Naturhistorisk Museum Aarhus 2005) treating vitrines and windows as shopping windows
where, in a delirium of selling, Nature becomes central, Sonofon and the dolphin, the Esso tiger,
Schweppes and the leopard.
In the installation The Drum of Extinction the death mask of a gorilla, which died in the zoo of Copenhagen
in 1965, is not just decoration but the main piece for sale. A small drum, OMO soap boxes and light blue
liquid in Coca Cola bottles called 'Morphed bison sperm from the time we did not have to listen to
Madonna' (Paleo Psycho Pop 1996), are the other elements at play in the installation. Extinction not
only threatens the animal kingdom, but the pop phenomenon as well.

Hilirius Hofstede (born in Holland, 1965) is an artist and a author. He has exhibited in Moscow, Amsterdam, Dublin and Copenhagen.
